Kanchuka Pooja (Kapruk Pooja)

Devotees from Sri Lanka and abroad have shown great enthusiasm and devotion toward performing the Kanchuka Puja in honor of the Kirivehera Chaithya. As many devotees have made inquiries regarding this meritorious offering, a few important points to be aware of when conducting such a pooja are mentioned below.

1. Devotees who wish to perform the Kanchuka Pooja in honor of the Kirivehera Chaithya are kindly advised to obtain prior permission from the Chief Incumbent of the temple well in advance. The reason for this is to emphasize the protection and long-term preservation of the Chaithya rather than the conduct of the Kanchuka Pooja.

2. A total of 95 yards of cloth is required to be wrapped around the Chaithya for the Kanchuka Pooja. For this purpose, either cloth in the color of Buddhist monks’ robes or cloth in the six colors of the Buddhist flag should be used. However, before wrapping such cloth around the Chaithya for the Kanchuka Pooja, it is necessary to present it to the Kirivehera administration and obtain prior approval.

3. For this pooja, the required chanting (Shabda Puja) and the assistance of attendants can be obtained from the temple. All other offerings and requisites for the ceremony should be arranged by the devotees themselves.

4. The wrapping of the covering the Kanchuka around the dome(Gharbhaya) of the Chaithya should be carried out on the approved date and at the designated time. As the dates and times for other devotees may differ, it is kindly reminded that providing special consideration or assistance to those who arrive late would be difficult.

Please note

Devotees who arrive on the date and time reserved in advance will not be allowed to lay the Kanchuka around the dome (Garbhaya) of the Chaithya on rainy days or when the dome’s surface is wet. In such situations, devotees are kindly requested to discuss the matter with the temple administration and resolve it accordingly.
